Discussion at the last supper

Jesus at The Last Supper

John 13:31 – John 14:14 KJV
Discussion at the last supper.

31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

  • Get to know your characters: 31 “He” is Judas. “the Son of man” is Jesus.
  • This says Judas had gone out. I learned later in the passages that Judas leaves to betray Jesus and tell opposing Jews where he was to have him arrested.
  • This makes me think of what Judas did. When one piece of scripture makes us think of another piece of scripture, we call that a “connection”. connection: I think of John 18:2-3, “ And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.”
  • Matthew 27:3-5 When one piece of scripture makes us think of another piece of scripture, we call that a “connection”. connection: Matthew 27:3-5, (Holman), “Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!” So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.”

32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

  • 33 Interpretation and Insight: What is it called when Jesus tells what is going to happen in the future?

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

  • 35 When one piece of scripture makes us think of something we know, we call that a “connection”. Connection: Reminds me of the song, “They will know you are Christians by your love.”

36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

  • Take note of repeated phrases.
  • 37 Repeat phrase: Peter reiterating his devotion to Jesus like he indicated in John 13 verse 9. This is twice Peter is emphatic about his devotion to Jesus.
  • Make it personal. Respond to scripture asking questions like, how do I apply this?.

38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

  • Reading other translations can give additional insight.
  • 38 Another translation: verse 38 says, Amplified Bible, “38 Jesus answered, “Will you [really] lay down your life for Me? I assure you and most solemnly say to you, before a rooster crows you will deny and completely disown Me three times.”

John 14

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

  • Reading other translations can give additional insight.
  • 14:1, Another translation: very interesting what he says here, Amplified Bible: “14 “Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me.”
  • Interpretation and Insight: What does Jesus say we need to trust in?
  • Make it personal. Respond to scripture when you read it.
  • Response:

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

  • 2 Ask the text: What does this mean to you?

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

  • Doctrine is a set of beliefs or concepts. Write down a doctrinal belief when you read it.
  • Write down the doctrinal belief.:

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

  • 4  Write down the doctrinal belief:

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

  • 5 What is the mindset of this character?
  • Connection: John 20:24-29, Berean Study Bible, … 24Now Thomas called Didymus,d one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”26 Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”27 Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

  • 6 It is good to memorize scripture. Choose a verse or passage that has importance to you or frequently memorized by others. Write the verse down when you find one.
  • Memorize scripture:

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

  • 7 Summarize a passage or verse:

Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

  • 11 Summarize: Jesus makes a statement of divinity.
  • 11 Write down the doctrinal belief.
  • Doctrine:

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

  • 12 What does this say to you? Interpretation and Insight:

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  • 13 Another version: ESV, Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
  • Interpretation and Insight:

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

  • 14 Interpretation and Insight:

Make it personal. Respond to scripture when you read it.

End your Bible study time with a prayer.

What my Notebook Entry looks like in my personal journal

PASSAGE: John 13 31 – John 14 14
TITLE: Discussion at the last supper.

  • This makes me think of what Judas did. I think of Matthew 27:3-5

CONNECTION: Matthew 27:3-5, Holman, “Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said. “What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!” So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.”

  • 33 Jesus is telling them that he was going but for a little while. He is telling them, but not directly so it is still veiled. This is prophesy.
  • 35 Reminds me of the song, “They will know you are Christians by your love.”
  • 37 Peter reiterating his devotion to Jesus like he indicated in John 13 verse 9. This is twice Peter is emphatic about his devotion to Jesus.

RESPONSE: I feel devotion to Jesus. Would I deny him?

  • 38 verse says, Amplified Bible, “38 Jesus answered, “Will you [really] lay down your life for Me? I assure you and most solemnly say to you, before a rooster crows you will deny and completely disown Me three times.”
  • 14:1, very interesting what he says here, Amplified Bible: “14 “Do not let your heart be troubled (afraid, cowardly). Believe [confidently] in God and trust in Him, [have faith, hold on to it, rely on it, keep going and] believe also in Me.”
  • Jesus sees his followers confusion and most likely their being alarmed. He says trust in God. Trust in Jesus.

RESPONSE: I am to trust in God and trust in Jesus.

  • 2 He is now talking about heaven and making plans for them to join him. We will live in heaven.
  • 3 He talks about the second coming.
  • 4 “You know the way” means go with Jesus by faith, not works.
  • 5 Thomas is confused here. Yet he is the one in the end that doesn’t believe Jesus rose from the dead. And then he is the one who pronounces Jesus as God.  CONNECTION: John 20:24-29,Berean Study Bible, “… 24Now Thomas called Didymus,d one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”26 Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them.
  • 6 I have this verse memorized. John 14:6, NIV “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
  • 7 Jesus makes a claim of divinity.
  • 10 Statement of divinity.
  • 11 This is a picture of the Trinity.. Jesus is in the Father, and the Father is in Jesus. Yet, Jesus has had to pray to the Father during these three years. Yet, the Father is the one who decides what Jesus is to do.
  • 12 Because we have the Holy Spirit, we are able to do “even greater things than these”.
  • 13 ESV, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” This is why we ask in prayer, “In Jesus’ name”.
  • 14 This is part of what we learn about prayer. NASB, “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”

RESPONSE: Lord, I need more belief/faith in my life.

PRAYER: Thank you, Lord for these words of truth. I feel comforted by Thomas’ unbelief then belief. I have times of unbelief and somehow this comforts me. I think about the words of the father, Mark 9:24 KJV, “And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
