Death of Jesus on the Cross
Psalm 119:9-16
I love these words
9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
12 Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes.
13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.
16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

John 13:1-30 KJV
Betrayal of Judas
1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
- Read study notes to learn more. NIV Study Bible says, “Passover was one of the annual feasts that all Jewish men were required to celebrate in Jerusalem.”
- When one piece of scripture makes us think of another piece of scripture, we call that a “connection”.
- Connection: God instructed Moses about these feasts and how they were to be observed. To read more, Exodus 12. A feast is what we would call a holiday. Like how to celebrate Christmas. Passover is remembering how God lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the wilderness through the night and into the parted Red Sea. You can find that story in Exodus 11
- 1 Summarize:
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
- 2 Write down Interpretation and Insight: Who does the betrayal?
- Interpretation and Insight : Who gets the credit?
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
- 5 Write down Interpretation and Insight:: Whose job was it to wash feet?
- Infer means to conclude from evidence and reasoning. What does this infer?
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
- 8 Read in another translation– NIV “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
- Personalize it: What would my response be? Would I feel the same as Peter?
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
- 9 What did the character mean?
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
- Inference – a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning:
- 10 What does Jesus infer to Peter?
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
- Summarize:
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
- 14 What is a new instruction Jesus tells us here?
- Inference – a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning:
- What is the inference here for us?
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
- 18 Read in another translation: NIV “… But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.”
- Connection: Look at verse John 13:26, NIV, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread…”
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
- Interpretation and Insight:
- 19 When the future is referred to, what is that called?
- What is the prophecy referred to here?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
- Read it in another translation: verse 20, NIV, “I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
- What are the emotions of the characters?
- What is the inference? I’m sure Judas even did miracles in Jesus’ name when he went out with the 70.
- When a verse makes me think of another verse somewhere else in the Bible, it is a Connection.
- Connection: Luke 10:9, 17 “9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” Then “17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.”
- How can Judas do miracles for Jesus then betray him? I went to the site GotQuestions.org to read their article.
- Who was Judas Iscariot? | GotQuestions.org
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
- 23 Know your characters: Who is the one whom Jesus loved? You may need to do an internet search to find out. GotQuestions.org is a good site for Biblical answers. Write in the search bar, “Who is the one whom Jesus loved?”
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
- Define words: What does “Sop” mean? Look it up in the dictionary.
- Connection: Look at verse 18, NIV, “… But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.”
- Connection: Look at verse 26, NIV, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread…”
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
- 27 Inference and insight. What does this mean?
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
- 30 “Sop” meaning the bread.
Response: How do you respond to this passage in your life?
Prayer: End your Bible reading time with a conversation with the Lord.
What my Notebook Entry looks like in my personal journal
PASSAGE: John 13 1-30
TITLE: Betrayal of Judas
- 1 Jesus knew it was time to show “his own” how much he loved us. He went willingly to his death on the cross.
- NIV Study Bible says, “Passover was one of the annual feasts that all Jewish men were required to celebrate in Jerusalem.” God instructed Moses about these feasts and how they were to be observed. To read more, Exodus 12. A feast is what we would call a holiday. Like how to celebrate Christmas. Passover is remembering how God lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the wilderness through the night and into the parted Red Sea. You can find that story in Exodus 11
- 2 Judas was to betray at the Last Supper. Credit of betrayal goes to the devil.
- 5 It was the servant’s job to wash the guests feet. Jesus took on the role of a servant.
- 8 NIV “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” What would my response be? Would I feel the same as Peter?
- 9 Peter did desire to be part of Jesus, so he tells him he’s all in.
- 10 Jesus assures Peter that he is one of Jesus’ own.
- 10 Jesus hints at his betrayal coming.
- 12 Jesus asks them if they understood the foot washing. Most likely, they did not.
- 14 Jesus explains that they are to wash each other’s feet.
- INFERENCE: I think this is to say serve one another in love
- 18 NIV “… But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.” Look at verse 26, NIV, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread…”
- 19 He tells them he was going to be betrayed so it was a prophesy, and when they look back, they will understand the prophesy, and see that it was fulfilled.
- 20 verse, NIV, “I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
- 21 Jesus knows Judas will betray him, and it is upsetting him..Jesus is not calm or casual about Judas betrayal. This upsets him. “troubled in spirit”. I would be upset if a friend betrayed me. He poured three years into Judas. Trusted him with the money. I’m sure Judas even did miracles in Jesus’ name when he went out with the 70. CONNECTION: Luke 10:9, 17 “9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” Then “17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.” How can you do miracles for Jesus then betray him?
- 23 “The one Jesus loved” many believe is John who wrote this gospel.
- “Sop” in KJV meaning the bread.
- CONNECTION: Look at verse 18, NIV, “… But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.”
- CONNECTION: Look at verse 26, NIV, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread…”
- 27 Satan entered into Judas. I always thought this was an interesting thing. Did he enter like an evil spirit enters a soul? Like Luke 10:17 says devils (spirits) are in people.
RESPONSE: Remember this somber scene of Jesus’ servanthood and anguish when taking communion.
